However, there are a few tricks to it. First off, knowing the right people. Some people won't be able to name a single gay person at the school -- others know them all, and can introduce you to all of them.
Some classes are more likely to have gays, as well, it seems. While this is of course not always true, there can definitely be trends -- for instance, I have a gay friend that was in a class for a specific branch of photography, and only four males were in the class. All were gay.
If all else fails, keep your eye out. Don't necessarily go up to anyone that you think "might' be gay and ask them out, but pay attention. If you meet someone and your gaydar goes into high alert, act in a way that will let them know you're gay, in case they're interested.
Unfortunately, the selection is rather poor considering the severe lack of gays in many areas, but it's possible.
