What is the legal minimum age to have sex in other countries? How to tackle underage sex being a problem?

I know it is 16 in the UK but is it different from country to country?

I also know a lot of people do not adhere to this law anyway and it is extremely rare that anyone is ever prosecuted for underage sex. How do you think the government should tackle this problem and make teenagers more willing to wait?

Do you think changing the age will make any difference? What is the legal minimum age to have sex in other countries? How to tackle underage sex being a problem?Age of consent in different countries:

People will have sex. No matter what the age of consent is, someone under that age will choose to have sex. You can't stop it.

In my mind, the legal age of consent is more a guideline, not a matter of the law. Do you really want to fine or imprison two fifteen-year-olds who decide to try it out? I think it's only really a legal matter in the situation of statutory rape or child molestation.

The only way to tackle underage sex is to teach children.

Teach them to respect themselves and their partners. Teach them that it's okay to say 'no'. Teach them that it's so often better to wait.

And - just in case - teach them contraception. What is the legal minimum age to have sex in other countries? How to tackle underage sex being a problem?
Remember we are dealing with some pretty powerful emotions so changing the age probably won't make a difference. The desire to have sex isn't really affected by what the law books say; around about half of my friends had sex before they were "allowed" to by law and the other half followed on within a year or two. I think the UK and Australia (where I am from) and most countries are right at the age of 16 for consent.

I think it is important for teens to know what they are getting themselves into and what the possible consequences are (which are pretty obvious). After the facts are provided, it is up to them to make informed decisions. There isn't a great deal more we really can do anyway. What is the legal minimum age to have sex in other countries?
