First, you should know that condoms don't protect against herpes. They are great against other STDs, but not herpes. So it really doesn't matter much if the sex was "protected" or "unprotected."



If you get symptoms, then go to your doctor immediately. They can do a swab test on the sore itself. If the sore tests positive for the herpes virus then you know that you do indeed have genital herpes.



If you do not get symptoms, then you'll need to wait 12 to 16 weeks before getting a blood test. It takes a while for herpes antibodies to build up in your blood, and that is what the blood test actually detects - antibodies. So, with no symptoms, you do indeed need to wait awhile to get accurate tests.



Also, one challenge with a blood test is that it will tell you THAT you have herpes, but not WHERE you have it. So if you get a positive blood test for HSV1 (for example) then you could have oral herpes, which most adults have and which is usually caught in childhood, or you could have HSV1 genitally, which is genital herpes and is an STD.

You can get tested the day after. But sometimes the virus can be dormant but you still have it.

thats false. Once your exposed to it you can get it. If you contracted it it doesn't take three months to show up on a test. If you have it it will be positive.

The virus lays dormant and hides in your DNA until it is activated which takes time.
